NIA introduces a new landscape of THAILAND with INNOVATION THAILAND EXPO 2018, the First Innovation Festival in Thailand Experience Ultimate Innovations by Thai and World-class Innovations


The National Innovation Agency (Public Organization), the Ministry of Science and Technology, hosts “INNOVATION THAILAND EXPO 2018”, the first Innovation Festival in Thailand, showcasing driving the country with innovations, raising awareness and recognition of potential of the country at international level in rapid innovation development, aiming at enhancing innovation index at jumping step rate, and announcing national innovation award 2018 during 4-7 October 2018 at Hall 98, BITEC Bangna. 

Dr. Suvit Maesincee, Minister of Science and Technology, said that “Thailand 4.0 policy is about transforming economic structure into “Value-Based Economy” by transforming the production line into innovation-related product development. The policy proposes to drive the industrial sector with technology and creativity, and elevating the service sector to become knowledge and expertise value-added services. “Innovation” is then the key that starts from the inside by upgrading innovations to strengthen the business sector, agriculture sector, service sector, social sector, and all networks. In addition, one of the goals to transform into “Thailand 4.0” is by transforming the country into “Innovation Nation”, or the country that grows with the changes and invent innovations that bring about the changes. This has to start with strengthening the foundation to support fundamental potential development that leads to opportunities to successful innovation development, developing infrastructure of innovation to promote access to tools and supporting mechanisms, including developing environment that corresponds to innovation growth, which leads to the increasing number of innovation and entrepreneurs into the system, and support to growth dynamic to elevate the innovation potential in individuals, organizational, and national level. This is so that all can grow together strongly and readily to create new values in the future. 

Dr. Pun-Arj Chairatana, Director of NIA said that the “INNOVATION THAILAND EXPO 2018” under the concept of “INNOVATION FESTIVAL” features a variety of fun and activities like festival in a theme: FAIR: the biggest Innovation Festival of the year; FIN: Start Innovation Business with the Government – New Opportunity for the future; and FUN: Enjoy the experience of innovations that will brighten your life. The festival holds cooperation from government sectors, private sectors, and educational institutes, including research study funds, research personnel and study development, research exploitation, and innovation creation to feature the national-level innovations to clarify the rapidness of innovation development of Thailand.

Dr. Pun-Arj adds that “there are 7 exhibition zones – the “Father of Innovation of Thailand” Royal Pavilion Zone, featuring royal initiated projects and science of sustainable development; Thailand Innovation Zone features 80 innovations from 10 industrial groups for a better life (1. Industry, 2. Health Care, 3. Traveltech, 4. MICE, 5. Foodtech, 6. Agriculture, 7. EdTech, 8. FinTech, 9. Business Solution, and 10. Lifestyle), and 8 highlight projects (1. Innovation District, 2. Yothi Medical Innovation District, 3. Punnawithi Innovation District, 4. Regional Connect, 5. Creative District, 6. Eastern Economic Corridor of Innovation: EECi, 7. INNOHUB, and 8. Startup Nation), and 15 government organizations that support and promote the entrepreneurs and startups; Innovation Award Zone showcases 126 outstanding innovations; Career for Future Zone features occupation direction in the future, along with training and consultation for new generations; Innovation Driven Enterprise Zone showcases 20 world’s leading companies that drive their business with innovation; International Innovation Zone features innovations from 21 organizations in 6 countries including South Korea, Poland, Hong Kong, Japan, Israel, and Malaysia; and Sponsor Booths. To further emphasize the country of innovation driving, the festival includes International Seminars to share and exchange opinions and experience from 50 Thai and international guest speakers in 3 main themes:1) ASEAN Innovation Leadership Forum, targeting senior management; 2) Government Transformation Forum, targeting governmental and local offices; and 3) Future Business Forum, targeting small and medium enterprise entrepreneurs, large organizations, and academic and scholars. There will also be a live broadcast of Shark Tank Thailand TV Show that will feature the world’s first live broadcast in front of live audience.

In addition, the event also included the signing of agreement with the partner organizations to drive Thailand to become Innovation Nation including: 1) Memorandum of Understanding on Intellectual Property and Innovation with Department of Intellectual Property to create and exploit the benefit from innovation and intellectual property for value addition and national innovation system making. The MOU emphasizes the development of intellectual property management innovation by deploying intellectual property database to analyze and identify the innovation development trends in Thai industry, and disseminate the outcomes to entrepreneurs as according to the policy of the government, including the facilitation for related government sectors and private sectors in access to the database for commercial implementation. 2) The Memorandum of Understanding on the operation of Innovation Diplomacy, and the Promotion of Thai Innovation Entrepreneurs to International Market with Department of International Economic Affairs to cooperate in the implementation of diplomatic innovation and the promotion of Thai innovation entrepreneurs to cooperate in promoting international relations by developing potential entrepreneurs, relevant innovations. NIA will provide consultation and financial support to entrepreneurs in developing innovative products and services that meet the needs of the global market in accordance with the policies and regulations governing the development and support of NIA’s innovative projects. While the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will support and promote entrepreneurs who are encouraged by NIA. 3) The Memorandum of Understanding on the Development of National Innovation System and the Innovation Ecosystem on Creative Economy with the Creative Economy Agency to promote potential of the entrepreneurs through knowledge in innovation and design, and develop area-based innovation and creative economy by developing plans and charts of innovation district and creative district on prototype area in Klongsan – Charoen Krung to become potential asset area of 3 aspects: networking assets, economic assets, and physical assets. The exchange of trade information will help strengthen the economic growth in the neighboring countries. And 4) Memorandum of Understanding for collaboration in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Startups with Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) to exchange trade information to further strengthen the economy to neighboring markets has been stronger. As well as information exchange regarding the event organization. HUAWEI CLOUD Thailand Startup Acceleration Program: Huawei Technology (Thailand) Co., Ltd. covers the duration of 6 months from November 2018 to April 2019. Besides the products and services on the Huawei Cloud, the company provides support in consultation, marketing and management, product development, cloud service training, technical workshop or innovation activities, as well as opportunities to expand business in China, regional market, and international market, and also business partner with Huawei.”

On October 5 of every year, "National Innovation Day" is held to honor His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. "The Father of Innovation". This year, NIA awards individuals and organizations for their outstanding performances e.g. National Innovation Award for Economic and Society Contribution, Rice Innovation Award, Thailand Innovation Awards 2018, Design Innovative Contest, Startup of the Year, Best Innovation Organization Award, UAV Startup, Social Innovation Business Plan Contest 2018, and Media Innovation, 126 awards in total.

This event not only motivates all sectors of the country to be active in the development of innovation and entrepreneurship, from youth, startup, entrepreneurs, executives and the general public. It is also an opportunity for everyone to get services from government agencies, learn how to build innovative businesses and study future business innovation trends.
